Hour of Code

Khan Academy Hour of Code

Today we are learning about coding through Khan Academy.  Students worked through a range of tutorials and experimented with creating snowmen and other pictures.
Here are  couple of examples from the early stages of our coding.
The main part of Hannah N's Snowman
Milan's start to a face.
Sita's duck.
We will share more as we explore coding.
Rimu Class students explore and enjoy Coding.

Update...We can add colour-
What do you mean the teacher doesn't know how to use coding?
Nathan on code:  Keen to code for more than an hour.  It keeps my brain working hard.

Caleb:  It is really good because it gets our brains switched on and working.  It gets us frustrated but it's fun figuring out what you can do.
Callum:  I really like it because you can work at it as a team to figure out the codes.

Farewell to Dave

Our Last Bible in Schools Lesson

Today we had our last Bible in Schools session with our lovely teacher Dave.  Dave has come to see us each Friday and shared stories from the Bible.
Today we made Christmas cake to send to the people of Kaikoura as they deal with the aftermath of the recent devastating earthquakes.
We will miss Dave and hope that we will see him again.
Many hands make light work.

Happy mixing.

A sneaky shot of Dave.

Rimu Class say see you again to Dave.

House of Bricks

House of Bricks Visit

"Building for Fun Exploring to Learn"

Who doesn't love Lego?  Today the Senior Hub have had fun building and exploring with Lego thanks to Rachel and Jason from House of Bricks.  This company was started after Rachel had saved for years and while recuperating from pneumonia, thought of the idea. She then spent all of her savings on Lego.  Her sister who is a teacher, helped develop the programmes and linked the activities to the New Zealand Curriculum.
Working to create gardens.

Creating buildings from around the world.

House of Bricks do birthday parties, holiday programmes and fundraising events.  Check them out and get creating.

Our Duffy Heroes

Our Duffy School Leaders

What a great surprise to see Anaru and Savannah back on Gilberthorpe territory.  They came back to their old school to speak with the Senior Hub about why reading is important to them.  We were so impressed with how well they spoke and the positive messages they shared.  Our Caught Being Good award recipients were handed their awards by Savannah and Anaru.
Ka mau te wehi!

We had to get a quick selfie with their old teacher...(not old like she's old).

Our Trip to Pak n Save

Food for Thought

Following on from our class lessons with Chloe from the Heart Foundation, we had a visit to Pak n Save to explore the different sections of the supermarket and looked closely at food labels to help inform influence our choices and what food to eat.  Here are a few shots of us studying labels.

A Very happy Birthday Surprise

Tamara's Birthday Surprise

Wow!  What a very lucky class Rimu are.  Today Tamara turns 11 and her mum brought in some birthday treats to help celebrate with the class.  We had pizza, fizzy, treats, cheese balls, crackers and of course scrumptious birthday cake.  We all felt very lucky to be able to have this birthday surprise treat.  Thank you Kyla!!!

The birthday girl and teacher selfie...always got to have at least one.

Glad Tamara's mum didn't over order pizza like somebody else we know.

Enjoying the special birthday surprise.
