Writing MindMups

Being a Courteous Writer

Today we learned how to create a MindMup so we could identify and remember the things we need to do when writing so we are showing courtesy to our audience.  For many of us, creating a MindMup was a new experience.  This is the one we co-created.  Check out individual student blogs to see theirs.

Our next step is to use MindMup for organising our ideas in different subject areas.

Learning From Home

Let's Learn

During the time that we are staying at home, we have been using these slides to guide our learning.  Whakamanawa class view this slide to find out what to do.  Each day, Miss Waho uploads a different video to help with her explanations.

I like using this as a template for our learning because it is simple and easy to follow.

I found this tool in my Google drive and created the slide to use.  I also used Powtoon and Voki.

I wonder if other people think this slide is useful.  Let me know what you think and how I could improve it for my students.

Math Mission

Using Powtoon for Math Instructions

It is a great time for exploration.  For week two I tried out a different Powtoon to give my Math groups instructions for the week.  Check it out:

The Value of Voki

Instructions with Voki

For Literacy learning from home, this week I created a Voki instead of recording myself.  I was interested to see if this idea would work and make things a bit more interesting for students.
When you use Voki, you can select and create your own avatar and put them in different settings.  You can then choose a type of voice an accent.
To enter the content for what your character will say, you can choose between recording yourself or typing the content in.
This is week two's Literacy instruction clip:
I haven't used Voki for a long time and really enjoyed it.  I thought that this would be a useful tool for teaching and for sharing learning.

I learned how to create Voki by visiting the Voki website and trying out how it looked.  I also used Screencastify to capture my Voki because I don't know how to embed it straight to my blog.

My next step is to teach students how to create a Voki and to be able to use this as a format to share learning.

Using Powtoon

Messages With Powtoon

During our learning from home time, teachers are recording a video to let children know what learning tasks are on the plan.  This week, I decided to explore with some tools I haven't played around with for a while or ever.
Monday's message for Whakamanawa was created with Powtoon.

Our next step would be to get students presenting learning using Powtoon and also to create lessons for different subject areas.

Week Two From Home

Google Meet Session

Kia ora whānau and welcome back to week two of learning from home.  Today in our Google Meet session, we went through our value for the week which is Being on Time.  We also had a look at Miss Waho's video messages for the day and week because she did them slightly differently to last weeks.
After we watched Miss Waho's Literacy clip, we had a look at Voki.  Miss Waho screen shared and showed students how to create a Voki.
This is the demonstration for when we were ready to share:
Our next step is to have a focus on our blogs, creating quality blog posts and using Voki to make our posts more interesting.

Welcome to Term Two

We're Back...But Not Back Back

Term Two has officially started back and Whakamanawa have been in touch.  Today we all met on a Google Meet so we could see each other and say hello.  We haven't used Google Meet before so it was good to explore this tool.  We had nineteen of us there and discovered that we can share our screens which will be great for our online learning as we work from home.
We have another meeting planned and are looking forward to chatting again.

Our next step is for Miss Waho to figure out how to view all faces at once instead of the speaker only.

Device Use

Being Device Responsible

Next week we will start using our devices for some parts of our learning.  Today we worked collaboratively to create agreed-upon ways that we need to treat our devices.  We looked at our school-wide expectations doc and discussed each point.  We then went into groups, pairs or worked individually to come up with a set of expectations for our class.
Our expectations chart from 2019
Examples of how we shared ideas

We then created a Google Drawing to create a poster for display in our learning space.
Our next step is to ensure that we all follow these guidelines.

Be Positive...Always

Using Venngage

Today we learned about looking good online.  This means, being positive in all that you do online.  We learned about Venngage and used this creative tool to show different ways to stay positive and safe online.  This is an example that Miss Waho used to show us:

My next step is to get quicker at using Venngage and see what else I can use it for.

I got the information about this from the Uru Mānuka Learning site.

What do you think is the most important thing about being polite online?

Post for Penny

Shout Out to Penny

Today in blogging, we learned about being positive online and how positive things can grow but so do negative ones.  We created a Shout Out to somebody in our lives.  We watched how to do a Screencastify and how we can post it to our blogs.
Here is Miss Waho's model and a shout out to Penny.

Next time I do a Screencastify, I will think and plan what I want to say and be clearer in my explanation.

I took photos from Penny's Facebook page.

What other ways can I be positive while online?

Creating Quality Blog Posts

Blog Posts

We are learning to create quality blog posts using a rubric.

I have not used a rubric before.  I would like to be in the green part of the rubric and be a smart learner.  I think I am in the orange section at the moment.

We are using the information from our Uru Mānuka Smart Learner resources.

I would appreciate knowing what you think I could do to be a better blogger.

Cyber Smart

Who is Cooper?

Today we looked at how we can find information about people/dogs online.  We viewed Miss Morgan's blog and commented on what we found out about her.
Miss Morgan's Post

The comments we left for Miss Morgan.
We then viewed Cooper's blog and completed the questions sheet to see what information we could find out.

This learning is important for us because we live in a digital world where information can be accessed from all around the world.  Our next step is to check in on what we post and share to make sure we are safe.

Tables Test

Time for Times Tables

Today I had a look to see how fast I could do my times tables.  I used Tables Test. Here is how I went:

This was pretty good but it was hard for me to find the actual answer even though I knew the answer quickly.
Next step: I want to learn my 6x Tables so I am faster.

Welcoming Paihia School

Te Ngahere Class from Paihia School

This term we have a new Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu  partner.  Te Ngahere from Paihia School are now our new blogging buddies.  We will view each others blogs and see what they have been up to.  Today we spent some time researching about Paihia and seeing where in New Zealand their school is.
We were then ready to make our first comments and introduce ourselves.
Here is our map showing where our Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu partners live:

Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu

Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu

We were a little bit slow in starting this year but we have finally got organised and have been viewing and commenting on the blogs of our Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu partners.  Our partner classes are Waitemata at Waikowhai School and Room 2 from Blaketown School.
The purpose of Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu is to give students the opportunity to view blogs from around the country and to have feedback and comments from other people on their own blogs.
Here are a few of our recent comments.
Zoey includes all of the parts needed for a quality comment.
Here are a range of comments posted by Te Rōpū Whakamanawa students.

Summer Learning Journey

Super Summer Learning

At the end of 2017, we were introduced to the Summer Learning Journey through the Manaiakalani Outreach Programme.  Students were able to sign up to take part by blogging throughout the summer holidays.
Today, Miss Morgan came in to present certificates and prizes to students who participated.
Two students who have now moved on the become Year 7, both did very well and have some great looking hampers to collect from school.
This has been great to see and we are looking forward to having even more people join the next journey.
Participants with their certificates.
Elijescha's effort earned her a great looking prize.
Siyona and Emily have prizes to pick up and enjoy.
