SkoolBo Success

Super SkoolBo Stars

SkoolBo is an online tool that children can work on and seem to really love.  They can challenge other players and earn points for the answers they correctly answer.  We are new to SkoolBo so have not yet discovered all that it can do.  We do know though, that the activities and challenges are based on Literacy and Numeracy.

In our first ClassBo Challenge, we earned way more points than expected.  We set another two day challenge and have a goal of 5000 points.  This challenge is still in process.

The students in Rimu can see where we as a school are on the leaderboard against other SkoolBo schools around New Zealand.  

Today, Eli saw that we were third so took a screenshot of the leaderboard and emailed it to Miss Waho.

During the school day we were placing third.

Later that evening, Emily was working on SkoolBo from home so emailed through another screenshot.

Later that day, learner from home pushed us into second place.

ClassBo 5000 Challenge Success

So earlier in the week we set a class challenge in SkoolBo.  We had two days to complete literacy and numeracy activities and reach 5000 points.  We received an email today so can now set our next challenge.  Here is the final leaderboard.

Prototec Example

We are learning to improve our times tables and basic facts.  Today we used Prototec to see what we need to get better at.
Here is my first attempt and my marks.

I think I need to work on division because some of these were not quick and easy to answer.

SKOOLBO Trial

Today we are trialling SKOOLBO.  Skoolbo is a great new program to help with reading and maths. Children are immersed in an incredible learning world and are highly motivated by the inbuilt rewards. Parents and teachers are equipped with an array of tools to help achieve wonderful educational outcomes for their children. And best of all – it’s free!

In Rimu Class, we are having a look at this to see if we think it is something for us to use to enhance our learning.  It certainly was a lot of fun so we are ready to review to see how it can benefit us.

Kapa Haka Visit Educare Delamaine

Kapa Haka visit for Matariki

To help the kids at Educare Delamaine celebrate Matariki, some of the senior hub Kapa Haka crew paid the pre school children a visit and performed some of our Kapa Haka repertoire.  While we performed, our audience was captivated.  The young children also sang for us and we very cute.  It was the second time we have performed and our students looked very professional and made us all proud.

We are learning about Samoan music and have been introduced to a new song.  Ms Tapuke has been guiding us through our Inquiry into instruments and teaching us how to sing while also learning some Samoan language.

Kūtai Article Follow Up

Reading about Kūtai

LEARN

This week in Reading, Whitu have been reading an article called Kūtai.  We learned some interesting facts about mussels and decided to buy some green lipped mussels and actually experience some of what we had read about.  

CREATE

Before we cooked the mussels, we had a loo, smell and feel of them.  We then put them in a pot to boil.  As they were boiling, we started writing a blog post about our learning.

There was a lot of excitement in the room when our kūtai started to open.

Some exploration and discussion about what bits were what.

Some kūtai needed a bit more encouragement to open.

Fear Factor fail...not a fan and could not eat it.

After we ate or didn't eat our kūtai, we took our shells to a nearby harakeke bush.  We had a go at stripping the flax to expose the muka, the fibre used for weaving.  It was interesting when this wasn't working so well due to the green lip of the mussel.  Once this was picked off, stripping the harakeke went a lot better.

We are Celebrating Ramadan

Today Miss Waho brought her Koran and Rehal in to class.  Sameer and Elham explained to us what the Koran is, how to respect it and when they read it.  They taught us about Ramadan and what that means for them.

Ms Tapuke got us to complete a KWL sheet about what we know about Ramadan.  We then got the opportunity to ask Sameer and Elham questions as they shared their religion and culture.  Every single one of us have learned something new and interesting about our classmates today.  

Before our discussion, we know very little about Ramadam.

Our next learning step:  We are going to continue our learning about Ramadan and join together at the end for a celebration. (Sameer and Elham want chocolate).

We worked collaboratively to create a slideshow showing what we have learned.

Our next step: Continue to research about our instrument, complete the creation of our slides then upload our work to our blogs.

Kiwi Can Brings us Integrity 

We had sad news today that Riki is moving on at the end of the term.  Today he brought Nathan in to meet us.  Nathan will be filling Riki's shoes and will work alongside Katie.  We would like to welcome Nathan to Gilberthorpe School.

Fitness Indoors

So the Christchurch winter weather has been a tad soggy lately so today we were trapped indoors.  We didn't let this stop us from doing our daily fitness.  Ms Tapuke introduced us to Go Noodle.
