Pre Performance Thoughts

It is the day before our big night.  Tomorrow night will have Rimu Class on stage in front of a huge crowd of whānau and friends from the Hornby community to perform our Pasifika item.  

Live has been working hard to create our costumes and lanterns.  We have one more rehearsal today and then tomorrow we will no doubt have some pre show jitters.  For me, this is the highlight of the term and I can't wait to see how the children show what they have learned.

Pasifika Performance Preparation

We have been very fortunate to have Live come in to Rimu Class over the last couple of weeks to help us in our preparation for our performance at our Hornby Cluster Pasifika Fiafia night.  

We are excited about how much we have learned and can't wait to perform.

We are learning our first sasa.  We will add more when we perform.

Olympic Torch

An Olympic Torch

Today we were very lucky to have one of the official Olympic torches in Rimu Class.  Jorja's dad was selected to run and carry torch in a rare opportunity to run with and carry the torch.  He ran with the New Zealand Olympians in the 2000 Olympics.  It was lit from the Olympic flame which is kept burning all the time.

Magic from Mona Williams

Today we had a special performance from storyteller Mona Williams.  This was her second time visiting Gilberthorpe School and once again she was able to captivate us with her story telling.

The House that Jack Built- This was an interactive rhyme where we all did actions as we recited about a rat that ate malt, the cat that killed the rat and a range of other characters who hung out at Jack's house.

Thanks to the genius of our history-Mona asked all of our Māori students to come to the front as she acknowledged our history and heritage of genius and she did a special prayer. 

Johnny Appleseed-This was a story about an ordinary person, who did an extraordinary thing.  He was a poor man and had no house or food.  He collected apple seeds from the apple cider factory and planted these.  After he died, his friends had a big sack of seeds but Johnny did not return as he has passed away.  His story lives on because apple trees grew and continue to grow.

The Delaware-Huria Matenga
This story was about a ship that came into trouble while at sea.  Waves crashed and the boat was getting destroyed.  Huria Matenga swam to the boat and helped the people on it make their way to safety.  Only one person died and this was known as an amazing rescue because she was not a competitive swimmer.

Ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

Tivaevae Patterns

Heading towards Cook Island Māori Language Week, we decided we would do some Tivaevae patterns for Fun Friday.  We folded squares of paper and traced a stencil or created our own designs.  When our patterns were cut, we unfolded our paper to see what beautiful design we had created.  We then mounted these on paper and they were ready to display or take home.

Farewell Mrs Woermann

Bible in Schools Farewell

Today we said farewell to Mrs Woerman because it was her last day with us.  She has been taking Rimu Class for Bible in Schools lessons every Friday this year and has taught us many lessons we can use in life.

Playing a cooperative game we can see how we need each and every member of the team.

This drawing reminds us that we need to have love for God, love for others, love for the environment and love for ourselves.

Today we learned about how important each and every person is.  We talked about qualities in people that are important.  

Farewell gifts for each other.  Mrs Woermann made us gingerbread people and we gave her cards and flowers.
