Kūtai Article Follow Up

Reading about Kūtai

LEARN
This week in Reading, Whitu have been reading an article called Kūtai.  We learned some interesting facts about mussels and decided to buy some green lipped mussels and actually experience some of what we had read about.
CREATE
Before we cooked the mussels, we had a loo, smell and feel of them.  We then put them in a pot to boil.  As they were boiling, we started writing a blog post about our learning.

There was a lot of excitement in the room when our kūtai started to open.
Some exploration and discussion about what bits were what.
Some kūtai needed a bit more encouragement to open.
Fear Factor fail...not a fan and could not eat it.
After we ate or didn't eat our kūtai, we took our shells to a nearby harakeke bush.  We had a go at stripping the flax to expose the muka, the fibre used for weaving.  It was interesting when this wasn't working so well due to the green lip of the mussel.  Once this was picked off, stripping the harakeke went a lot better.

SHARE
Next week, Whitu Reading group will complete their blog posts and share learning about this special, mollusc.

  4. I love Tyler's look of disgust in the second photo! I think my face would very similar. I am absolutely not a fan of kaimoana in any shape or form, but what a great learning experience for you all! Who did enjoy eating the kuati?
